Burberry coat

Coffee is the only thing I would like to have right now. I stop in front of Starbucks and order myself a cup of hot latte, which is the rightest thing to do now. I settle myself on a couch in the corner. Few business-like people are inside, talking with each other and some others are couples or business colleagues.

I slurp my coffee as I watch people passing by the road, busy talking in their cell phones or just mingling around to get fresh air. My cell phone rings several times with an unknown number blinking on the display.

“Hello?” I greet.

“Sugar, it’s Sean.”

“Oh yea. What do you want?” I say tiredly

“I know I have been such a hopeless guy and I’m sure Vi has told you about that I called her and asked her to think everything over.” He says.

“Uh-uh.” Really, it’s not the right time to talk about him and Vi.

“I just want to ask you a favor and I will also make you an offer. Look, you know I still like Vi, right? And I think you’re the only person who can fix things up for that you can always change Vi’s mind….”

“Yea, yea. I know. Just get to the point, please.” I say impatiently.

“Ok, here’s the point. I will try as hard as I can to make Jeremy likes you and you will help me to get Vi in return.” He says.

“Uh. Sorry, not interested.” I reply boringly. But then he laughs, “Don’t be ridiculous Sugar. I know you like Jeremy. Jeremy told me about last Saturday when you spent the night with him.”

“What? He told you?”

“Yes. And I should say that, he’s quite impressed and starts to like you. I can make things easier for you, especially when Jeremy still got feelings for his ex-girlfriend.” He continues.

Uh yea. Like I care…

“I’m sorry, but I think I have to turn this offer down. Not that I don’t want to help you…..ok, I don’t want to help you, and anyway, I don’t like Jeremy like what you think! I like him as a friend, ok?” there, I have made my point.

“Ok then. I have made an offer and you turn that down. Never mind. Screw you!” then the connection broke.

God, I can’t believe that I had sex with a guy like him! He’s such a jerk! A hopeless jerk!

I wake up in the morning to find Nathan and Nicho are inside my room, playing around with Jeremy’s coat. “Hey! What are you doing?” I shout as my eyes come to focus.

“This is such a cool coat! Where did you get it?” Nathan, who wears it now, asks.

“She must got it from a guy, you idiot!” Nicho says to Nathan and he tries to take off the coat from Nathan and wears it on his short posture.

“Put that on the chair! NOW!” now I really have gotten out from the bed.

“Oh yea? Make me!” Nathan says, he opens the door and run out of my room.

“Nathan! Come baccckk!” I shout and run for the coat, Nicho follows me behind. This is such a chaos! Nathan run down the stairs now and almost hits Mom in the kitchen.

“Hey! Don’t play running in the housseee!” Mom shouts. “Nathan! What are you wearing?!” she asks in astonishment.

“It’s mine! Give me back!” I shout as I run down the stair with Nicho.

“Didn’t I tell you to wake your sister up for a breakfast?! And what is this thing?” Mom has taken off the coat from Nathan. “Goodness! It’s a Burberry coat! Where did you get this, Sugar?” she gasps at the tag of the coat.

“It’s my friend’s.” I mutter.

“Your friend. Who?” Mom asks curiously. “This is a man’s coat isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is. They shouldn’t have taken it from the hanger!”

“And whose coat is this?” Mom asks again, in more suspicious eyes.

“That’s Jeremy’s. He’s my friend, Vi’s friend too.” I answer.

“Give this back to him, now! Today!” Mom says in a very strict tone.

“Ok. I will.” I reply.

The rest of the breakfast has so far gone pretty well. I have called Jeremy to ask him to meet me and he says he will wait for me at Starbucks. Mom hasn’t talked but Nathan and Nicho are enough to make the dining table buzzing.

The day at school has gone pretty well. Vi got her new hairstyle and everybody adores her newly cut hair. It’s half bob and she also colored her hair light brown! She said ‘it’s just for variation’ which I’m pretty sure it must have cost her a lot.

“Ok, Vi. Need to tell you something…” I take a look around as I speak. We’re in the canteen at the recess time and we have got a table near the window.

“What?” she bites her buttered bread.

“Sean called me yesterday.”

“No way! What did he say?!” Vi almost threw her bread up, her eyes got bigger. This is so strange, seeing her in her new light brown hair and when she got surprise, her face looks different. Ok, back to the topic…

“He offered me something. He said if I could make you like him back, he will make Jeremy likes me in return!” I whisper as I say that. I don’t want anybody else hear this pretty important news.

“What?! And what did you say?” she holds her breath, waiting for me to answer.

“Of course I turn it down! And I said to him that I don’t like Jeremy as how he thought I am!”

“But don’t you fancy him?”

“No way!” I exclaim, “I like him as a friend. Not more.” I secretly cross my finger under the table. I don’t know how I feel about him actually, he’s nice, but in a different way than what Ian feels for me.

“Oh. I thought you like him. I know he still has some feelings about his ex, but that was a long time ago, he should have another relationship and you too!” she says in such disappointment.

“Well, we’ll see later…” I say.

The spring air is totally in the air. It blows me cool wind in the afternoon and a very cruel cold wind at night. And now as I walk to the Sanctuary, I can feel my mood’s getting better. I know I will have to meet Ian today, maybe he’s not as disappointed as yesterday, and maybe I could talk to him about everything today.

I find Diane standing behind her cashier machine, bit there’s no sign of Ian. “Hey!” she greets as I walk in.

“Hey! Where’s Ian?” I put my bag down and tied my hair in a ponytail.

“He said he doesn’t feel good today. He got fever last night and he has to get lots of rest today.” She says.

“Oh.” So, today isn’t a good day after all. Ian doesn’t come to work and it means everything to me. I thought I would be able to talk to him today, but it turns out he doesn’t come at all.

I spent the day at work in silence, daydream, and muttering. Customers are a bit lousy today and so while Diane’s writing her diary and decorates it with flowery pattern, I make a paper airplane and fly it around the shop.

“What’s wrong with you?” Diane asks without looking away from her diary.

“Nothing.” I answer.

“What nothing? I know you got a problem, it’s like printed on your face!” she says.

“Really? “ am I that transparent?

“Yes! Well, you can always tells me about anything, really!” she says gently.

“Thanks. Actually you’re right about the problem part. But I really don’t want to talk about it. It’s not important anyway.” I take the airplane and throw it to the air.

Suddenly my cell phone rings, I quickly take it out from my bag and see ‘Jeremy’ is calling me. I press the green button, “Hi!”

“Hey, Sugar! I just call to tell you that I’m here at Starbucks. I hope you can come earlier here cos I got another important meeting at 6.” He says in a hurry.

“Oh. Ok! I’ll be there!” I shut the phone off and take my bag. “Diane! I have to go! Can you do everything without me for few minutes, it’s pretty important!”

“Sure!” she replies. I know I can always count on her, and so I run to the bus stop and catch the first bus that will take me to the Starbucks.

Jeremy’s sitting on the table next to the window, where he can sees me rightaway since I got out of the bus, “Hi!” I try to catch my breath as I take a seat in front of him. “Here’s your coat.” I pull out a really long brown Burberry coat and hands it to him.

“Ok. Thanks for ironing and washing it.” He says.

“No prob. so, you should be in your meeting in 15 minutes,” I say, looking at my watch.

“Yea. But they suddenly postponed it. Stupid people!” he mutters. “Sorry to make you in such a hurry.” He apologizes.

“Oh, that’s fine by me. Soo, I think I should go back to my work.” I say.

“Oh! Really! I’m really sorry to interrupt you and your work. Where do you work? May I come with you?” he asks.

“Uh, that’s ok. But I’m sure you will get bored there.” I try my best to keep him off the shop. He will recognize the shop as his ex-girlfriend’s mother shop.

“I’m sure not. And besides, I don’t really have anything to do now. I can drive you faster.” He really gets a point everyone. “Come on.” Without warning he takes my hand and drags me to his Porsche.
