It’s 11.30 p.m. when we are in the car, in our way home. Jeremy doesn’t speak at all although I can tell that he’s quite curious about my attitude just now. This silence is too tense and I think I should talk, about anything. This has been a beautiful night before I met Diane and I will not ruin it.
“Don’t worry. She’s my friend.” I say at last.
“and what did I do wrong?” he asks. What?
“You didn’t do anything wrong! Really Jeremy, this isn’t about you at all. It’s just a little misunderstanding between me and my friend.” I say “and she thought you are my boyfriend.”
“Oh. But you said you don’t have a boyfriend?” he steps on the brake so that we don’t crash a really slow car in front of us.
“Yeah. I don’t. There’s this misunderstanding. And she got everything wrong. I should have told her.” I say quietly “and I’m sorry.”
“For what?” He turns on his audio player that has been completed with super sound system and played one of my favorite song “Heard ‘em say” by Kanye West. “For almost ruining this beautiful night and not finishing my muffins.” I say apologetically but surprisingly he laughs and the sound of his laughter suddenly comforted me. I know everything will be alright.
We arrived in front of my house when it’s almost midnight. Jeremy quickly gets out of the car and run to the other side of the car, he opens the door for me! How sweet! It’s like in a love story and romantic movies.
The cold night air sweeps my body all over and the cold wind brush my cheeks when I step my feet out of the car. “Oh my god! It’s really cold!” I feel my teeth crackling “you should go back to the car!” I say to him in hurry. But instead of running back to the car, he takes off his long Burberry coat and gently put it around my shoulders.
I’m too speechless too talk right now and he beams at me “Good night!” then he gets inside his car. I’m still standing on the pavement as I watch him gone with his silver Porsche.
It’s another OH MY GOD moment.
The sun shines really bright from behind my creamy curtain and my phone rings really loud. I lazily silenced it, please make it shush, God! I’m really tired and I haven’t got enough sleep! But the phone still vibrates and it doesn’t go off!
I force my eyes to open and see the caller’s name. it’s Vi! I press the phone to my ear.
“Vi! God please! I want to get some re….”
“Good morning Honey! How’s your night? Wonderful, huh?” cuts in Vi.
“Vi! Can I please get some rest? Some real good rest?” I mumble.
“Well, I will give you time later. But life’s too short to be wasted! And hey anyway, it’s 10 a.m. already! You should really get out of your bed!” I hear her chewing some really crunchy chips and I suddenly realized of how hungry I am.
I straighten my back and yawn, “And what is it you call me this morning?” I rub my eyes and come to focus. My gaze fall upon a black long coat, it’s not mine…how do….
Oh! It’s Jeremy’s! It seems like a really long time ago and anyway, it has been a tiring night.
“I just want to ask how your night was. And I think I need to tell you something..” she bites another chips.
“What is it?” I’ve push the duvet and get my feet on the warm wooden floor. She pauses for some time and says “….But, it’s not important anyway..” she laughs dryly “I wanna know your night. How was it?” she asks again.
“Oh, it’s not that wonderful as what you think. It’s just normal night. We ate at this bright and cute café and then he drove me home.” I simply say.
“He didn’t kiss you?” she asks eagerly.
“No. what, you didn’t set everything up again right?” I had enough “setting up” thingies already.
“No! of course not! I promise you right that I will never do that again?”
“Ok. And….what is it you wanna tell me?”
“Er.. actually…Sean called me last night when I just got home…” she says slowly.
“What? What he really wants from you? You broke him up weren’t you?”
“Yes, of course I did break him up. He called me and said that he wants me to consider this decision again. And I said I already thought it over and I still want to break up with him.”
“and?” I hold my breath.
“and he seemed so sad. But as what I told you before, he’s boring. And so I told him that…”
“What?”
“About that he’s a boring guy. So stereotype. He’s not special anymore. He’s good-looking but that’s it.”
I burst into laughter, “no way! That must be hurt!”
She laughs too, and after some time she answers, “yes. It is. I thought he was going to cry!” she exclaims. And then we laugh even more..
And so, that was the story about Sean. I and Vi called his story as a “the end”. Case closed! At least….that’s what we thought it is.
It’s Thursday already! And it means one thing to me, working day! I pace up my steps happily as I get closer to Sanctuary. The weather is good and it’s really windy. I push the shop door open to find Diane and Ian are inside, chatting.
“Hi!” Diane and Ian greet me.
“Hi!” I reply.
“Oh! You know what I saw last Saturday Ian?!” my body suddenly freezes. No way! She can’t possibly tell him!
I clears my throat loudly, “actually Diane. I need to talk to you.”
“What did you see?” Ian asks curiously.
“I saw Sugar last Saturday!” Diane beams.
Can somebody listen to me?!
“Diane!” I try to stop her frantically
“…with a really good-looking guy!” she finishes.
There’s a pause in the room. We are all silent. It’s like someone has pressed the “pause” button right now. Diane is in her happy face, Ian looks surprised, and I know I look stressed out.
“Oh! Wow!” Ian says in such disbelief spreads across his face.
“No! Diane! I’ve told you that he’s not my boyfriend, right? ” I feel rage and shame rising inside my whole body.
“Well, who would believe you, Sugar? Especially in a Saturday night! So, that’s your “another event to attend”, isn’t it?” she gives me an understanding look.
God, what should I do?!
“No Diane! It’s not the event that I meant….”
“Diane’s right, Sugar. You can always be open to us and tell everything to us!” Ian says, although his face looks crashed. I really didn’t mean to be like this!
I really am speechless and there are so many things I want to explain and so many things I want to say!
Then the door suddenly opens, a girl with a guy comes in. it’s Ian’s turn so he assists them. God, now he got everything wrong too! Just at the time I start to like him.
Night has fallen and it’s time for us all to go home. We didn’t talk much during work time today, especially when Ian’s so silent and always answer everything with not more than 3 syllables. And I think it’s not the right time yet to say or explain anything, but this whole misunderstanding has made me quite stressed out.
“Bye all!” Ian says as he opens the shop door.
“Hey! Actually I’m going to ask you guys for some coffee time.” I hastily say suddenly.
Please, don’t go!
“I don’t think I can do that, Sugar. I really need to go home. Sorry.” Ian closes the door and left.
“I will go with you!” Diane says. But I really don’t care. I just want to talk to Ian, explain everything!
“I’m sorry Diane. I just remember that I have to cook dinner tonight… bye” which is a lie.
