As we drive along the road, I can feel my fingers start sweating. How will he react if he finds out that I’m working in his ex-gf mother’s store? “Which way now?” he asks again for the many times, we’re facing a junction. “Left.” I reply.
“You know what, this really reminds me of a place.” He says.
Oh yea, your ex gf mother’s store?
“Really? What?”
“It’s a place. I used to picked my ex gf in her mother’s shop because she sometimes helped her Mom in the shop, and I always passed this road.” He says, looking on the road.
“Well, wouldn’t that be funny if that I work at your ex gf’s shop?” I laugh as I say it.
“No way. That’s impossible.” He says, laughing too. “Ok, now which way?”
“Right. The place is the second building on the right.” He turns right to a small road with series of shops and houses. After some nervous seconds, we stop in front of a shop with a shining board above the store, Sanctuary.
He’s quite speechless for some time. “Do you work here?” he finally manages to ask me.
“Er, yah. Why?” I pull up a confused and innocent face.
“You’re working in my ex gf mother’s store! You’re working in Mrs. Manson’s store! This is insane!” he says in disbelief.
“So?”
“You can work in your own company, isn’t it? Why did you choose to work here? Just to get closer to the customers? But this is Hayley….”
“Ok, I know this must really remind you of your ex gf, but please don’t freak out. I work here, okay? It doesn’t really matter to me whose store is this. And ok, I don’t have any company.” I admit.
“What you mean? Your dad has got a new company, right?” he seems so lost.
“Ok, here it goes.. My dad works in a normal home product supplier. My Mom’s accountant. We never had a company..” I slowly says, just to make sure he gets all of the points.
I know he must be angry about this. “And who’s Earl Gavin that you mentioned? The Scottish?” Oh. I have totally forgotten about him!
“I don’t know who he is. We never even met, and I’m not really sure that he’s really existed anyway. I made it up!”
“So, Earl Gavin is not even a living human?” he asks dumbly.
“Well, as far as I know, nope.”
We pause for seconds. God, he must be angry! I’ve lied to the people around the table at that night. What if he would never forgave me? I would be so sad. And what if he really…. He seems to digest all those information and all of a sudden, he emerges a huge laughter and he doesn’t stop! Hey, he’s not angry! And so I laugh too, remembering my stupidity at that night.
“You’re so funny, Sugar!” he says in between his laugh, he grabs his stomach because it starts to hurt. “And so, the card that Ms. Willis gave you? You didn’t use it in anyway, huh? Oh my god, Sugar, you’re unbelievable!” then he laughs more.
“Well, actually I still keep the card, but I don’t know what to do with that card!” I admit.
“God…” he laughs again.
After the laughter has come to a halt, we decided to get inside the store. I push the door open and see Diane’s assisting a customer. “Hey!” I mouthed as I come in.
“Hey!” she replies, mouthing too. And when her eyes catch Jeremy, she suddenly freaks out, “The guy!” she mouthed in horror. I grin and she keep on mouthing “oh my god!” for several times until the customer asks her, “Which of these bottles is made in
What kind of question is that?
“Actually, none. Because we made everything ourselves.” Diane answers coolly.
After the customer has paid and left, Diane pulls me aside and whisper, “You take your boyfriend here?” her eyes widen.
“I’ve told you! He’s not my boyfriend!” I whisper back. “He’s my friend!”
Suddenly Jeremy speaks and it makes us jump, “Hey, this card is cute, how much is this?” he flips a card back and checking every side of it for a price label.
“It’s $30. every card here is $30, even for the bigger ones.” I reply.
“This is cute.” He says, looking a card with a teddy bear on the front and the words saying “I miss you”
“It’s for your ex gf, isn’t it?” why the hell am I asking that question? That is so stupid! He laughs and says “No. actually, I’ve been checking this girl out recently and I really hope to get to know her better.” Suddenly his cell phone rings, he picks it up and talks in a low volume.
“Yes……the best, what you mean he’s not there? …..I’d like it to be ready……anything!” then he snaps the phone shuts. “Sugar, I’m really sorry, but I have to go to my dad’s company, right now.”
“Oh, that’s fine with
He pays for the card and leave with his exclusive car.
“A pool party?! Cool!” Vi beams at me.
“When?” I ask. We both leaning closer to Kelly Connor to hear her better. “Maybe around 8 o’clock. You should be there! And don’t forget to shave your legs and pubes!” Kelly says, pushing her chair back and leave to the other group of boys.
“God! This is so cool!” Gina squeaks.
“Yeah, I know.” Clara puts in.
So, this Saturday, there will be a pool party, consist of all the coolest guys and girls of the year. And, well, ehm ehm, without any means to boast, I’m one of the “60 most beautiful people on the corridor” in our school magz. Of course, Vi is included and the party will be hold in Kelly’s huge house is completed with swimming pool.
This will be on of the highlights in this year and there will also be some cute seniors and some freakin good-looking guys from our year. This is the main reason people got freaked out when their name is printed on the magz.
Lucky for me that I happened to bought a set of pretty bikini yesterday and I’m totally ready for the event. Vi is readier than me, she always is. She’s got everything she needs. But for other girls, it’s a bit of too late to search for a new set of bikinis.
